Exhaust Manifold
As the gas is expelled from the pistons, it finds it's way into the exhaust manifold. Now with a positive pressure the gas will continue to be pushed to the catalytic converter. The gas is full of VOCs or Volatile Organic Compounds.

Oxygen Sensors
They are called oxygen sensors for a reason. they detect how much oxygen is left unburned in the exhaust gas. The Engine Control Unit (ECU) will take this informmation and adjust the amount of fuel that is placed into the engine.

Catalytic Converter
The catalytic converter contains rare precious metals such as platinum, rhobidium, and vanadium. These such metals will convert the VOCs into a less harmful composition, such as carbon dioxide, water, etc...
Muffler
Expelling the exhaust gas as quickly and quietly as possible is the purpose of the muffler. Exhaust gas enters the chamber and the sound is essientially "lost" inside. The gas will bounce around until it finds it's way out the tail pipe.
